Food Insecure

While many of us have had some sort of unexpected financial burden over the last several weeks, those who were previously food insecure are likely to find themselves with incredible need right now.

Sadly, many more families have become food insecure practically overnight with very minimal social safety nets.

Timing Is Everything

In a while life will return to feeling a bit more familiar.

Right now too many of our neighbors are hungry.

We can do something about it today.

In our family, we talk about the sacrifices made to put food on our table and we try to make sure our kids understand that not all of their friends or neighbors are as fortunate.

One of the ways we try to build empathy and a broader world view is through donations to local food banks and international organizations doing amazing work to lift up those in poverty around the world.

I am hoping that the TC Farm community could band together as a group of individuals. Together we could make a significant difference in this time of unprecedented need. Of course many of us may be unable. But for those us of who are:

Organizations to Consider

North Country Food Alliance - This organization provides 5 meals for every dollar donated and gathers food that might otherwise go to waste to distribute to local families. We donated to NCFA instead of giving purchased holiday gifts this year.

Second Harvest - Operates regional food banks as well as community education, outreach, distribution and more.

Heifer International - This is more of a "teach a person to fish" type organization. The world's poor really will need help after this has passed. Heifer provides training and resources for those in need. Think about programs teaching women to raise goats in Nepal or how to profitably raise chickens in Guatemala -- AND providing the seed stock to start them off. Heifer also has many programs in our country. Betsy and I asked for donations to Heifer in lieu of gifts at our wedding (although we still got many amazing gifts along with the donations - thanks!)

Please include Slvation Army in your list. They provide food to those without and the need, as you noted, is much greater now.
